american lithuanian cultural archives (ALKA) goal:
- to preserve the lithuanian american cultural legacy by maintaining
the archives,
the museum and the library
- to help scholars research the work and history of the lithuanian community
ALKA is maintained by
elected officers.
the archives are located in putnam, connecticut, near the immaculate conception convent.
brief history:
1922: father juras starts collecting lithuanian books, periodicals, artwork, and crafts
1935: the archives are moved to the offices of "darbininkas" in boston, where the name "ALKA" is born
1963: the archives are moved to putnam, ct
1972: responsibility for ALKA is transferred to LCAS (lithuanian catholic academy of science)
