The goal of the American Lithuanian Cultural Archives (ALKA) is to preserve the Lithuanian American cultural legacy by maintaining the
archives, the
museum and the
library,
and to help scholars research the work and history of the American Lithuanian community.
ALKA is maintained by the elected LCAS board. A brief history:
1922: Father Juras starts collecting Lithuanian books, periodicals, artwork, and crafts.
1935: The archives are moved to the offices of "Darbininkas" in Boston, where the name "ALKA" is born.
1963: The archives are moved to Putnam, CT.
1972: Responsibility for ALKA is transferred to LCAS (Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science).
The archives are located in Putnam, Connecticut, near the Immaculate Conception Convent.
